Thermal insulation of house walls with rigid PUR foam or polystyrene?

Heat losses are becoming more and more expensive due to the exponential increase in gas and coal prices. Therefore, it is worth taking care of thermal insulation of the house walls, which can be done e.g. thanks to PUR rigid polyurethane foam. Why should you choose it instead of polystyrene? Continue reading to learn the details.

What are the advantages of PUR foam insulation?

The method has many practical advantages. First of all, PUR foam is very airtight, while also guaranteeing vapour permeability, i.e. no condensation of water vapour. An additional advantage is the possibility of perfectly matching it to any type of surface without risking leaks. This is one of the main advantages of PUR foam over polystyrene, which we are not able to adjust to irregular spaces in such a precise way.

However, this is still not the whole list of advantages of rigid PUR foam for thermal insulation. It is also necessary to mention that it is a safe material due to its self-extinguishing properties. A slight disadvantage, however, is its lower resistance to UV radiation. Therefore, if PUR foam is exposed to UV rays, care should be taken to protect it with acrylic paint, and possibly also silicone.

Why not Styrofoam?

In addition to the previously mentioned ability to perfectly match PUR foam to any surface, it has one more advantage over polystyrene. Namely, polystyrene does not have waterproofing features, similarly to mineral wool. The installation process of this type of insulation is also quicker than when cutting polystyrene. This affects the cost of the insulation service, and this difference will be visible especially in the case of large areas, e.g. factories, warehouses and halls.

As you can see, thermal insulation of a house with rigid PUR foam has many advantages, including in comparison with polystyrene, which is often used for this type of work. Our product range includes such foam. We also recommend it for utility and public buildings, and even freezer cars and cold stores. Feel free to contact us.
