What sponge is used in upholstery work?
Various materials are used for padding and filling in upholstery. One of such raw materials is upholstery sponge, which is characterised by durability and elasticity. It can be used in many ways. It will be perfect for the production of not only furniture, but also in the construction, automotive and even heating industries.
However, depending on the industry and products, the need for a specific type of upholstery foam varies. What parameters should you pay attention to?
Type of sponges in upholstery
Polyurethane foam is used for upholstery works. Depending on the type of sponge, it is characterised by appropriate flexibility or stiffness. The undoubted advantages of this material include its elasticity and lack of susceptibility to permanent deformation.
JAG offers two types of foams that are used in upholstery:
Flexible polyurethane foam (Type T) is suitable as a filling for seats and backrests of various furniture, such as armchairs and sofas. It performs the same function in mattresses and pillows, giving them the right hardness or softness. Outside the furniture industry, this type of foam is used for the production of sponges, scourers and wheelchair components. The production of flexible polyurethane foam is not limited by density or colour, which is why it works so well as furniture stuffing.
Rebound polyurethane foam (Type R) is used very similarly to flexible polyurethane foam (Type T). The difference is that the rebound sponge is of higher density. Therefore, it is suitable for the production of firmer bedroom mattresses, headrests, mats and sports protectors. In addition, thanks to its elasticity, it can be used in the rehabilitation industry as inserts for exercise equipment and cushioning pads.
The purchase of a sponge for upholstery use should therefore depend on its purpose, i.e. its required density. Although it is a universal material, it is a good idea to choose the right type for the given application, so it can offer the best performance and offer its reliability for many years.
