What thermal insulations will work best in sports halls?
Sports arenas are places where people come to play and practice, so they require proper thermal insulation. Insulation is crucial for sports halls because it helps maintain the right temperature and humidity levels inside the hall, which is comfortable for both athletes and spectators. Different types of insulation can be used in sports halls, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. In this article, we will look at the different types of insulation available.
Main thermal insulation materials
When it comes to insulation for sports halls, among others, there are three main types of thermal insulation material:
- expanded polystyrene (EPS) - so-called polystyrene foam
- glass and stone wool - so-called mineral wool
- rigid polyurethane foam - PUR/PIR
EPS polystyrene - This is made from steam-foamed polystyrene granules (and additives) which, after foaming, are formed into blocks and then cut into boards. Another insulating material is the rock wool variety, which is produced from basalt by smelting at temperatures in excess of 1,400 degrees Celsius, and the glass variety, which is similarly produced from quartz sand and finely broken glass. The third material is PUR/PIR rigid polyurethane foam, which consists of two basic components - an isocyanate and a polyol with the addition of catalysts and a foaming agent, prepared under suitable conditions and produced using a specialised process line.
Advantages and disadvantages of different types of insulation
PUR/PIR rigid polyurethane foam has many advantages over mineral wool or polystyrene insulation. It provides excellent thermal resistance, with the lowest heat transfer coefficient of 0.023 W/mK, which helps maintain a constant and comfortable temperature inside the hall. The improved performance allows the use of a thinner layer of insulation material than in other insulation materials.
